The Effects of Estrogen Replacement Therapy on Cognitive Processes in Postmenopausal Period

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate that effects of ERT on cognitive processes in healthy postmenopausal women without dementia. Method: Sixty one volunteer postmenopausal women (26 in ERT group and 35 in nonERT group) took part in the study. ERT subjects were between 41-69 years of age (mean: 53.31, s.d.: 6.60); nonERT subjects were between 45-62 years of age (mean: 52.37, s.d.: 4.20). The groups were matched for levels of education, age, menapousal type, and postmenapousal period. Cognitive processes were measured through 44 scores obtained from Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R), Cancellation Test (CT), Raven Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) and Line Orientation Test (LOT) all of which had been studied with respect to psychometric properties by Karakaş and colleagues for the Turkish culture. The tests were individully administered to the subjects by experienced testers. Results: Univariate and multivariate multifactorial techniques did not reveal significant differences between the ERT and nonERT groups. Conclusion: Some studies report positive effect of ERT on cognitive processes. In spite of the usage of different techniques of inferential statistics, the present study could not demonstrate the pervasive cognitive changes that some studies found.

Postmenopozal Dönemdeki Estrojen Replasman Tedavisinin Bilişsel Süreçlere Etkisi

Amaç: Çalışmanın amacı, sağlıklı postmenopozal dönemdeki kadınlarda estrojen replasman tedavisinin bilişsel süreçler üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Yöntem: Çalışma, menopoz sonrası dönemde bulunan 61 gönüllü sağlıklı kadın üzerinde yürütülmüştür. Hormon replasman terapisi alan (ERT+) grupta 26 denek, hormon replasman terapisi almayan (ERT-) grupta ise 35 denek yer almıştır. ERT+ deneklerin yaş ortalaması 53.31, postmenopoz süre ortalaması 6.00 yıl; ERT- deneklerin yaş ortalaması 52.37, postmenopoz süre ortalaması 4.41 yıl olmuştur. Gruplar arasında eğitim, yaş ve menopoz süresi açısından benzer bir dağılım elde edilmiştir. Deneklerin bilişsel süreçleri, Türk toplumu üzerindeki psikometrik çalışmaları yapılmış olan Wechsler Bellek Ölçeği Geliştirilmiş Formu, işaretleme Testi, Raven Standart Progresif Matrisler Testi ve Çizgi Yönünü Belirleme Testinden elde edilen 44 puan aracılığıyla ölçülmüştür. Bulgular: Tek ve çok-değişkenli çok-faktörlü istatistiksel analiz teknikleri, ERT+ ve ERT- denekleri arasında, incelenen puanlar açısından bir fark olmadığını göstermiştir. Sonuç: Literatürde ERT'nin bilişsel etkileri konusunda çelişkili sonuçlar mevcuttur. Bazı çalışmalarda ERT'nin bilişsel süreçlere olumlu etkisi rapor edilmiştir. Gerekli deneysel kontrollerin yapıldığı mevcut çalışmada, bazı çalışmalarda ERT etkisi olarak elde edilen geniş kapsamlı bilişsel değişikliklerin, değişik vardamlı istatistik tekniklerin kullanılmasına rağmen gösterilmesi mümkün olamamıştır.
