Schizophrenia and Cigarette Smoking

The habit of smoking which confronts us as one of the important health problems in our days has been mostly seen in psychiatric patients especially those who are suffering schizophrenic disease. In this regard, it would be better to find the right answers to below questions. 1. What is the prevelance of smoking among schizophrenic patients? 2. Why do schizophrenic patients smoke more than the other? 3. Is there any differences observed in the normal course of the disease among schizophrenic patients who are smoking? 4. What is the effects of smoking in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antipsychotics? 5. Is smok-ing one of the risk factors of the development of tardive dyskinesia and extrapyramidal symptoms? The main of goal of this article, is to review the relation between schizophrenia and nicotinic system by analysing the effects of smoking i.e. nicotine, on the central nervous system.

Günümüzde önemli bir sağlık sorunu olarak karşımıza çıkan sigara içiminin psikiyatrik hastalar arasında özellikle şizofrenler arasında daha yüksek olduğu dikkati çekmekte ve bir takım sorular akla gelmektedir. I. Şizofrenlerde sigara içme yaygınlığı nedir? 2. Neden şizofrenler daha çok sigara içiyor? 3. Sigara içen şizofrenlerde hastalığın kliniğinde değişiklikler gelişiyor mu? 4. Antipsikotiklerin farmakokinetik ve farmakodinamiğinde sigaranın etkileri nelerdir? 5. Tardif diskinezi ve ekstrapiramidal semptomların gelişiminde sigara içimi bir risk faktörü mü? Bu yazının amacı, sigara içiminin dolayısıyla nikotinin merkezi sinir sistemindeki etkilerinden yola çıkarak şizofreni ve nikotinik sistem arasındaki ilişkinin gözden geçirilmesidir.
