The Examination of the Social Anxiety Symptoms and Sociodemographic Characteristics on Panic Disorder Patients

Objectives: The present study aimed to determine the difference between the symptoms of social phobia, and the sociodemographic variables among panic disorder (without agoraphobia) patients. For this aim, panic dis- order patients was compared with participants who were not diagnosed any pscyhiatric disorders. Method: The research sample consist of 300 patients, 150 of them who diagnosed with panic disorder according to DSM-IV criteria and the other 150 of the participants who were not diagnosed any psychiatric disorders (compared group). The participants sampled from 3 psyciatry clinics. All of the participants were given a sociodemographic data form and the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). Results: According to the findings of this study, patients with panic disorder reported significantly higher LSAS social fear scores than the scores of the compared group. However, LSAS avoidance scores showed no sta- tistically significant difference between the panic disor- der patients group and the compared group. Additionally, within this study, some of the sociodemo- graphic characterisics were found significantly different. Women have higher social fear scores than men. In the same way, low educated participants had higher social fear scores than high educated ones. These findings were consistent with the literature. Conclusion: Consequently, the results of this study highlight that panic disorder patients has higher comorbidity with social phobia rates than individuals who were not diag- nosed any psychiatric disorders. Also, it was associated with some sociodemographic characteristics. The results of this study will discussed with previous findings in the literature.

Agorofobisi Olmayan Panik Bozukluk Hastalarında Eşlik Eden Sosyal Fobik Semptomların ve Sosyodemografik Değişkenlerin İncelenmesi

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, agorafobisi olmayan panik bozukluk olgularında eşlik eden sosyal fobik semptom- ların ve ilişkili sosyodemografik değişkenlerin incelenme- sidir. Bu amaçla, panik bozukluk tanısı almış hastalar ile herhangi bir psikiyatrik bozukluğu olmayan kişilerden oluşan karşılaştırma grubu sosyal fobi ölçek (LSFÖ) puan- ları açısından karşılaştırmıştır. Ayrıca, LSFÖ puanları sosyodemografik değişkenler açısından da incelenmiştir. Yöntem: Çalışmanın örneklemi, özel iki hastanenin psikiyatri polikliniklerine ve özel bir psikiyatri kliniğine başvuran ve DSM-IV tanı ölçütlerine göre Panik Bozukluk tanı ölçütlerini karşılayan 150 Panik Bozukluk hastası ve herhangi bir psikiyatrik bozukluğu olmayan 150 kişiden oluşmaktadır. Her iki gruba da bireysel bilgi formu ve Liebowitz Sosyal Fobi Ölçeği (LSFÖ) uygulanmıştır. Bulgular: Bu araştırmada elde edilen bulgulara göre, panik bozukluk hastalarının LSFÖ korku puan ortala- malarının karşılaştırma grubunun korku puan ortala- malarına göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde daha yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. Ancak, kaçınma puanları açısından iki grup arasında anlamlı bir farklılaşma bulu- namamıştır. Ayrıca, panik bozukluk hasta grubundaki kadınlarda erkeklere göre ve düşük eğitim düzeyi olan- larda yüksek eğitimlilere göre daha yüksek panik bozuk- luk puanları bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Bu çalışmada, panik bozukluk tanısı almış hastalarda sosyal fobik semptomlar karşılaştırma grubuna göre daha fazla görülmüştür. Ayrıca, cinsiyet ve eğitim düzeyi açısından anlamlı fark- lılaşmalar bulunmuştur. Literatürde de bu yönde bulgu- lar vardır.
